You’re probably here because you’re unable to focus on your work and we’re glad we got you covered!

While working, people are distracted often. The world is running at its own pace and in an environment where you are surrounded by colleagues, supervisors and bosses, it is nearly impossible to stay focused at work. According to a 2015 study from Microsoft says that on average a human being has an attention span of fewer than 8 seconds. However, in this digital era, the number of attention span has reduced because our attention is always on what’s new on Instagram or any other social media handle.

Constantly telling yourself to stay focused on a task and not use a mobile phone is easier said than done. When I am working, the next minute I am on Instagram or Facebook checking what story or post my friends has added. I often wonder how people stay focused at work and are not distracted. How do they complete their deadlines for the day? After wondering about it for ages, I have come up with some easy tips and ways which will help you not only stay focused at work but will also help you to meet your deadlines effectively.

1. Set an Agenda

Before you start working, it is important to set clear goals for the day. You need to prepare your brain that you’re going to work 8 hours a day and make a list of tasks you have to complete in a day. For example, I make a list of tasks and mention that by what time I’ll finish task A, task B and so on. You need to get in a flow so that you can achieve your tasks effortlessly without consuming extra time while achieving maximum performance.

Trust me, it really helps you stay focused on your day’s agenda.

2. Make your workstation interesting

Get yourself the most comfortable yet an aesthetically pleasing work station. If you are working in a comfortable position, you will less likely to feel tired and strenuous. Discomfort distracts you the most so avoid that by getting yourself comfortable at work. This way without having your eyes and head tired you can continue working for a long period of time. Pile up your things neatly on your desk, keep one drawer or area for your snacks and other personal items. This will help you grab a snack without getting distracted or losing your focus from work.

3. Breakdown tasks which are time-consuming

Often you are assigned with tasks which are time-consuming. It is not necessary to complete those tasks in one go. You can always split up lengthy and time-consuming tasks into smaller tasks. The smaller chunks of doable tasks will help you complete them in less than a day. Moreover, this will also help you to have a better idea of what you have to do next.

4. Always take small coffee breaks

In order to avoid your mind from being saturated with all the tasks and assignments always take small breaks in between your work. It will freshen up your mind and will help you work more efficiently. For your break, choose a computer-free zone, sit around with colleagues and have some basic chit chat over a cup of tea or coffee. Listen to your favourite songs or binge watch one of the episodes of your favourite shows on Netflix.

It is better to take breaks instead of becoming overwhelmed with work during the day.

5. Put your phone on aeroplane mode while working

To avoid any distractions because of your phone, put it on aeroplane mode or turn off the notifications. Till time phone is the biggest distraction we have in our lives whether we are working, eating, playing or sleeping. Phones have become our purpose in life.

While working, turn off the notifications for your social media handles like Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat so that your attention span prolongs in time. However, you can check your phone once in a while to ensure you haven’t missed an important call or message. But don’t check it a million times a day! People usually tend to do that and we are warning you!

6. Use the Pomodoro Technique

Pomodoro technique is a time management technique that is adopted by many people in order to help them stay focused at work. This technique makes use of a timer to help you breakdown time in intervals. Conventionally the timer is for 25 minutes after which an individual can take a break for 5 minutes and then resume working. This technique follows some steps which are as follows;

  • Choose which task you want to do for the day
  • Set the Pomodoro timer
  • Start working on the task
  • Once the timer rings stop working and take a break

The major goal and objective of this technique are to help an individual reduce the internal and external distractions during work.

7. Fuel up your body

Hunger pangs are also one of the greatest distractions when you are at work. When you are hungry, and you have work to do, you feel frustrated as well as annoyed; a deadly combo though!

In order to solve this problem, stay focused and keep your energy levels up to make sure that you feed yourself up on time and do not skip your food. Go for a diet that does not make you lethargic enough which means eat lean protein, healthy fats and avoid consuming a lot of carbohydrates. Snack on your favourite food and keep yourself hydrated by drinking loads of water in a day.

8. Get enough sleep

This is the point where I cannot stress enough. Having a good sleep is very important. Majority of the employees working lack sleep, whereas the recommended time for sleep is 8 hours a day. In order to stay energized and fueled up at work, it is extremely important to sleep on time and have a good sleep for 8 hours. Not having a good sleep at night does not only impact your memory but also adversely impacts an individual’s ability to focus. Hence, getting enough sleep is also very important if you want to stay focused on work!
